Delicious Low Carb Comfort Food Swaps to Satisfy Cravings without Breaking Your Diet

recipes May 05, 2023

One of the things new clients often say to me is that they are sick of fad diets and want a way of eating that is more sustainable so they will be able to stick to it in the long term and not gain the weight back.

The only way an eating plan is going to work for life-long weight maintenance is if you are prepared to follow it for life. I've followed a low carb eating plan for 23 years which is how I've maintained my 30kg weight loss and lost an additional 40kgs of pregnancy weight, so I know without any doubt that it's sustainable.

One of the best things about a low carb eating plan is that it allows a wide range of options and you can easily create great alternatives for those favourite high-carb meals.  It really  is possible to enjoy comfort eating without going off the plan.

Here are five delicious low-carb comfort food swaps that will keep you on track when you are craving favourite foods.

  1. Cauliflower Mac and Cheese

Mac and cheese is a classic comfort food that can be hard to resist. Fortunately, with a few substitutions, you can still enjoy this dish without the carbs. Instead of traditional macaroni, use cauliflower florets as a low-carb swap. Roast or steam the cauliflower until tender, then mix with a cheese sauce made from cream, cheddar cheese, cream cheese and seasonings.  Add cooked bacon pieces for extra flavour. This dish is rich, creamy, and satisfying, without the high carb count of traditional mac and cheese.

You could also use a low carb pasta, for example these low carb pasta elbows from Low Carb Haven.

  1. Pizza made with a low carb wrap

A standard wrap can have up to 35g of carbs but the low carb wraps are under 10g.  Use the wrap as a pizza base and top with pizza sauce, meat, veges and cheese.  A delicious and simple way to enjoy pizza without the carb hangover.

  1. Zucchini Lasagne

Lasagne can be high in carbs due to the noodles. However, by using zucchini as a substitute, you can create a low-carb version that is just as delicious. Slice the zucchini into thin strips, then layer with a meat sauce made from beef mince, tomatoes, and seasonings. Top with mozzarella cheese, then bake until bubbly and golden brown. This dish is hearty, satisfying, and a great way to enjoy Italian cuisine without the carbs.

  1. Cauliflower Fried Rice

By using cauliflower as a substitute, you can create a low-carb version fried rice alternative that is just as tasty as the high-carb version. Pulse the cauliflower in a food processor until it resembles rice, then stir-fry with vegetables, egg, and seasonings.

  1. Buffalo Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Buffalo chicken wings are a classic comfort food that can be high in carbs due to the coating. However, by using lettuce leaves as a wrap, you can create a low-carb version that is just as delicious. Cook chicken breast in buffalo sauce, then wrap in lettuce leaves with blue cheese dressing and celery.  Yummo!

Following a low-carb diet doesn't mean you have to give up your favorite comfort foods. With a little creativity, you can create low-carb versions that are just as delicious and satisfying.

When you can eat in a way that meets your physical as well as emotional needs there's no doubt you will be able to stick to the food plan for life!
